What happens when two directors from Poznań decide to step onto the stage and into film together? Teach Her Language is a collaborative project by Olha Hryhorash from Ukraine and Ula Kijak from Poland. What might come from a meeting where Olha teaches Ula the Ukrainian language? It’s not just language lessons, but also an opportunity to discuss cultural contexts, the possibilities of mutual understanding, and the challenges of everyday life in a foreign country.
Teach Her Language is meant to provoke while remaining a profoundly intimate encounter between two languages, two women, two histories. What connects Olha and Ula? Ula is becoming „Ukrainianised,” and Olha is helping her. Or perhaps it’s the other way around?
Eпізод 0 is the first instalment of this project – its inauguration and first meeting with the audience.

Що вийде з того, як дві режисерки в Познані вирішать зіграти у фільмі та на сцені разом? Навчи її мови – спільний проект Ольги Григораш з України та Улі Кіяк з Польщі. Це буде не лише сухе вивчення мови, а й час пізнати культурні контексти, можливість взаємого розуміння, а до того, ще й розмови про труднощі повсякденного життя в не рідному краю.
Навчи її мови має бути провокаційною і водночас глибоко інтимною зустріччю двох мов, двох жінок, двох історій. Що поєднує Олю та Улю? Уля украінізується, а Ольга їй допомагає? А може щось зовсім інше?
Odcinek 0 – це перший випуск проекту, його інавгурація та перше спіткання із глядачем.

Does our identity depend on external definitions, or can we choose it ourselves? Must it be earned, proven, or tested? Is it determined by our birthplace, the language we speak, or the documents granted to us?
When Alena applied for a Residence Card, her Polish heritage was already officially recognised. Yet, she still had to pass a peculiar test to be considered truly Polish.
– Sing the third verse of the Polish national anthem.
– Are you Catholic?
– What Polish books do you know?
– Describe a historical event important for Poland.
– What national holidays do we celebrate?
Would Ula pass such a test?
Three women – from Ukraine, Poland, and Belarus – step into the Temple of a Thousand Doors, inspired by The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. One can reach any place from within, but first, one must know where one wishes to go.
There is in Fantastica a certain place from which one can go anywhere and which can be reached from anywhere. We call it the Temple of a Thousand Doors. No one has ever seen it from outside. The inside is a maze of doors. Anyone wishing to know it must dare to enter it.

Teach Her Language is a performative series unfolding in life and on stage, episode by episode. Initially, it was a provocative yet profoundly intimate portrait of two Poznań-based artists: Olha Hryhorash from Ukraine and Ula Kijak from Poland. Over time, as the project evolved, Alena Varaksa from Belarus joined them.
Since autumn 2022, Olha has been teaching Ula Ukrainian – from scratch, from the alphabet, from discovering entirely new ways of producing sounds. Together, they placed a Polish woman in a linguistic and educational situation familiar to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian and Belarusian women. Yet teaching a Polish person Ukrainian is just a fraction of the experience – after all, Ula is 'at home.’ Or is she? Her nationality connects her both with those constantly supporting refugees and with those shouting about the 'Ukrainisation of Poland.’ So, Ula is becoming 'Ukrainianised,’ Olha is helping her – or is Olha the one shaping Ula? Meanwhile, Alena records, edits, and joins in with her perspective, as someone for whom both Polish and Ukrainian are foreign languages, though she is learning them and can perform both on stage. Olha and Alena have lived in Poland for years – so are they 'at home’ too?

Навчи її мови – це своєрідний перформативний серіал, створений у реальному житті та на сцені, епізод за епізодом. Спочатку це був провокативний і водночас глибоко інтимний портрет двох артистек з Познані: Ольги Григораш з України та Ули Кіяк з Польщі. Зараз, вже в розпалі роботи, до них приєдналася Алена Варакса з Білорусі.
З осені 2022 року Ольга навчає Улю української мови – з азів, з абетки, з пошуку зовсім іншого звукоутворення в мовному апараті. Разом вони поставили польку в мовно-освітню ситуацію, в якій перебувають сотні тисяч українок і білорусок. Втім, викладання української мови для польки, це тільки верхівка айсберга – Уля, зрештою, „у себе”. Справді? Вона ділить державність і з тими, хто постійно допомагає біженцям, і з тими, хто продовжує кричати про „українізацію Польщі”. Тож Ула українізується, Ольга їй допомагає – чи, може, це Ольга українізує Улю? А Алена записує це, монтує і долучається зі своєю перспективою людини, для якої і польська, і українська мови є чужими, хоча вона вивчає обидві і може виступати на сцені обома мовами. Ольга та Алена вже багато років живуть у Польщі, тож вони теж „у себе”?

Першапачаткова гэта быў правакацыйны, але ў той жа час глыбока інтымны партрэт двух познаньскіх мастачак: Ольга Грыгораш з Украіны і Улі Кіяк з Польшчы. Цяпер да іх далучылася Алена Варакса з Беларусі.
З восені 2022 года Ольга выкладае Улі ўкраінскую мову – з нуля, з алфавіту, з пошуку ў апараце мовы зусім іншага спосабу здабывання гукаў. Разам яны паставілі польку ў моўную і адукацыйную сітуацыю, у якой знаходзяцца сотні тысяч украінак і беларусак у Польшчы. Зрэшты, вучыць польку ўкраінскай мове – гэта дробная частка гэтых абставін – бо Уля, аднак, знаходзіцца дома. Але ці напэўна? Яе аб’ядноўвае грамадзянства як з людзьмі, якія ўвесь час дапамагаюць уцекачам, так і з тымі, хто працягвае крычаць пра „украінізацыю Польшчы”. Такім чынам, Уля ўкраінізуецца, Ольга ёй дапамагае – а можа, гэта Ольга ўкраінізуе Улю? А Алена гэта запісвае на відэо, мантуе і далучаецца са сваёй перспектывай чалавека, для якога і польская, і ўкраінская мовы чужыя, хоць яна вучыць обе і можа выступаць на сцэне на абодзьвух гэтых мовах. Ольга і Алена ўжо шмат гадоў знаходзяцца ў Польшчы, ці яны таксама „ў сябе”?
